Das Studium

It is becoming more and more important for community development professionals to include an international perspective in their specific work environment: globalisation and migration are giving local communities a new face. Furthermore, the time has come to exchange and share experiences and approaches rooted in different branches of community development. Globalisation means the movement of people, ideas and money with increasing impacts on local communities. Incidentally, there already is a large number of approaches in diverse projects and regions worldwide. And that is why, in September 2008, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in cooperation with London’s University of Westminster (School of Integrated Health and School of Architecture) will launch a Master programme in International Community Development.

Berufsbild und Karrierechancen

The Master programme in International Community Development (in English) embraces an international dimension of working with communities, recognising that any “local” initiative needs to be seen within a “global” context. People in a variety of work roles and settings, e.g. community workers, planners, health professionals, architects, engineers and project managers, face challenges of working with communities that require a respectful understanding of and creative responses to difference and diversity. The programme is designed for people employed by local, national and international agencies as well as NGOs that work with communities in different settings and countries using a community development approach. The programme is designed to prepare and equip people who have a commitment to work with communities underpinned by principles of social justice to effect meaningful and sustainable change in their localities.

Studienplan und Studienschwerpunkte

The Master programme will be credited with 90 ECTS points, distributed among 6 compulsory core modules, 4 of which will be made available as two-week block seminars. The courses in Lucerne will be held mainly during the second half of each week of a 14-week term. The Master thesis, which spans one year, will consist in the completion of an applied research project.

Tuition Fee: The tuition fee will be approx. CHF 17’500. Admission Requirements The programme is open to those wishing to develop a critical approach to practice in working with communities in an international context. Students must have at least two years of experience working with communities an Honours degree or equivalent qualification (Bachelor’s degree) fluency in the English language (IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL score of 650 or 250 computer-based)

	This programme is targeted at students seeking a practical, science-based and international Master’s degree in an innovative professional field who hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work / Community Development, Social Sciences, Cultural Sciences/Ethnology, Architecture, Spatial Planning, Economics. It is a cooperation with with the Centre for Advanced Professional Practice, School of Integrated Health, and the Department of Urban Development & Regeneration, School of Architecture & the Built Environment, University of Westminster (UK).
